Includes flowers, medicinal plants, and other flora. Additional volumes were published in subsequent years; this first volume was originally published in 1846. A definitive collation for this work as problematic, as Stafleu notes: "The copies listed in The National Union Catalog show a great variation." According to Stafleu, there are three issues of volume I, dated 1846, 1847, and 1848. The present copy is the 1848 third issue of volume I, which should have a frontispiece, engraved title and fifty plates. This copy matches that description, with one plate repeated for a total of 52 plates plus the illustrated title. The title page calls for 66 plates, but this edition was not issued as such. Sold as a collection of plates. Scarce.
