Two bound volumes of Japanese crepe paper books, & 5 other illustrated works




Early 20th century?


The bound volumes comprise four separately issued stories in each, one is sewn wrappers, the other in cloth; the other stories are in wrappers or this boards. Illustrated with color woodblocks.

First bound volume comprises:

  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 1: Momotaro.
  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 2: The Tongue Cut Sparrow.
  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 3: Battle of the Monkey and the Crab.
  • Japanese Fairy Tales. Second Series. No. 3. The Broken Images.

The front wrapper of the first and the rear wrapper of the last are worn with loss; the double leaves on which it is printed have been cut open.


The Second bound volume comprises:

  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 9 The Serpent with Eight Heads.
  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 10. The Matsuyama Mirror.
  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 11. The Hare of Inaba.
  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 12. The Cub's Triumph.

Spine rubbed, head chipped.


Also, in slightly larger format and printed on regular paper:

  • Shitakiri Suzume
  • Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 8: Urashima.
  • Japanische Marchen: Der Spiegel zu Matsunama
  • Nedzumi no Yome-iri. (disbound, worn, possibly incomplete).

We have a full service shipping department to ensure proper packing and safe delivery of purchases at reasonable cost. We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail.  We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances. For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.

A buyer's premium of 20% will be applied to all purchases.
