Caricatures by W.R. Sculthorpe, 1867

Sculthorpe, Walter R.

61 (of once 66) original watercolor drawings, many colored. Mounted to card stock, captioned beneath. Formerly bound in an album, now loose and the binding no longer present. Overall 29x22.5 cm (11½x9").

Little can be found about this talented English caricaturist though he seems to have been primarily employed as a clerk in the Twopenny Post and at some point president of the London District Office. The Letters of Charles Dickens cites a letter from Dickens to Sculthorpe in 1859. The scenes humorously depict various aspects of English life and society in the latter half of the 19th century though, according to a note by the artist, some are redrawings of earlier works dating as early as the 1830s. The five illustrations now lacking were sold in a 1998 auction at Christie's and are perhaps still somewhere in the trade. A wonderful collection. Holograph presentation from the artist and several photos mounted on blank leaves.

Lot Amendments

Disbound, some wear at edges; illustrations overall very good.
