624 pp. Profusely illustrated throughout. (8vo) 22.3x13.8 cm (8¾x5½"), original brown cloth, stamped in gilt and black. First American Edition, Second State.

Second state with the caption on p. 443 reading "The St. Charles Hotel" and without the tailpiece depicting an urn, flames and the head of Mark Twain on p. 441. At the request of Mrs. Clemens, the original tailpiece was removed as she felt it too morbid. BAL 3411.

A bit of light rubbing to cloth, rubbing to extremities; ownership inscriptions in pencil on front endpapers, one signature near middle of volume (pp. 321-336) detached but present; else very good.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
