Second state, with leaf C4 a cancel. Rowley was the literary creation of the very young Thomas Chatterton, writing in the guise of a 15th Century monk. Chatterton committed suicide by poison in 1770 at the age of 17. He became a heroic tragic figure in Romantic art. Very rare in the original untrimmed state.
