3 volumes. Printed wrappers. Includes:

  • Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young.  11pp. (12mo)18x12.5 cm (7x5"). Front wrapper printed in black and red. Bound with string. Light wear and soiling to wrappers, ownership signature on first blank page; very good. [c.1902-5].
  • Four Letters by Oscar Wilde Which Were Not Included in the English Edition of "De Profundis." 34 pp. (12mo)18x12.5 cm (7x5"). Saddle stitched. This piracy was published from the text of the Italian edition of De Profundis, which contained these letters not included in the English edition. Wear and soiling to wrappers, ownership signature on title page; very good. First printing of this edition. 1906.
  • De Profundis. Approximately 28 pp. (8vo), 20x13 cm (8x5"), folded sheets, title page and a few others detached but present. Pages brittle, with chips to edges, toning. about good. [c.1905].

Three early pirated editions of works by Oscar Wilde. De Profundis and Four Letters are housed in the printed envelopes of revered San Francisco rare book seller David Magee. The de Profundis envelope notes: "This edition was hawked in the streets at 6d a copy, but legal action was taken and most copies destroyed."

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
