First state, with Humpty Dumpty beginning on verso of dedication leaf. Denslow's marvelous interpretation of the traditional Mother Goose rhymes, illustrated throughout in color, about half of the pages containing full-page color illustrations. Denslow "edited" cruelty out of the verses, indicating early political correctness. He had intended to letter the text himself, but on finding the work too demanding he hired the noted designer Frederic Goudy to finish the book, and on the colophon-page at rear crediting Goudy he has included a caricature drawing of the calligrapher.
