The Friend: A Semi-Monthly Journal Devoted to Temperance, Marine and General Intelligence - including the only issue published of Folio

Damon, Samuel C., editor

Honolulu, Oahu, HI

Polynesian Press

92, 4, 80 pp. Includes New Series Volume IV, Numbers I - 12 and Volume V, Numbers 1 - 10; Old Series, Volumes XII and XIII (Jan.-Dec. 1855, Jan.-Oct. 1866). (4to) 29x23 cm (11½x9"), three quarter brown leather and marbled boards, gilt spine.

The Friend was issued monthly (despite the subtitle), and offers a wealth of information on Hawaii and the Pacific during the years covered. Damon was a prominent early missionary, and the issues are full of news of ships, cargoes, other Pacific islands and Pacific voyages, whaling, temperance, advertisements, and news from California and other shores of the Pacific. Included are pieces on the funeral of Kamehameha III and inauguration of Kamehameha IV, the annexation of the Sandwich Islands, etc. Present as well is the only published issue of The Folio, the first women's newspaper in Hawaii and probably was also the first in the Pacific region. More issues were promised, but none followed the original edition, which was designed as a handout for a fair sponsored by the Ladies of the Protestant Mission. The newspaper was reprinted and distributed to subscribers of the Friend in its next issue. Only these reprints are thought to survive. The Folio is a rare, and generally overlooked piece of early feminism.

Lot Amendments

Some wear to binding with rubbing to extremities, minor bumps to top corners; small ownership label on front pastedown, foxing throughout; very good.
