vi, [2], 420 pp. With wood engraved frontispiece, 2 wood engraved plates, a plan and three folding maps at rear,  7 wood engraved text illustrations. (8vo) 22.5x14 cm (9x5½"), original red blindstamped cloth, gilt spine. First Edition. 

With short inscriptions on the front free endpaper, apparently by the author and his wife, dated 1863 and 1875. Scarce work on travels in China; rare inscribed copy.

Condition:
Wear and soiling to cloth with some rubbing to extremities, corners lightly bumped, darkening to spine with a few tears to cloth; hinges cracked, volume leaning a bit; good.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
