[4], 531 pp. (8vo) original brown half morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, all edges marbled. First Edition.

Penciled inscription on front flyleaf to Francis G. du Pont "from his affectionate aunt Sophie." Francis du Pont's bookplate on front pastedown. Francis du Pont is credited as the creator of smokeless gunpowder. Limited to approximately fifty copies, privately printed for the family, none of which were for sale. The first 48 pages are concerned with the conquest of California. Du Pont commanded the Atlantic blockading forces against the Confederacy during the first two years of the war. Scarce. Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
