Title:
Abeokuta and the Camaroons Mountains. An Exploration

Author:
Burton, Richard F.

Place:
London

Publisher:
Tinsley Brothers

Date:
1863

Description:

2 volumes. xvi, 333; iv, 306 pp. With portrait frontispiece, canvas-backed folding map, 4 wood-engraved plates. (8vo) 19x13 cm (7½x4¾"), later half blue leather and cloth, spines ruled in gilt, raised bands, gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. First Edition.

Justly renowned by this time for his explorations in the Middle East, India, and Africa, Burton suffered the ignominy of being offered the post of consul at Fernando Po off the West African coast -"the white man's grave" - and further being stripped of his commission as an officer in the Indian Army. Ever energetic, he made use of his time to explore the coast and travel inland to visit the native chief in Abeokuta, the capital of Nigeria, and to obtain his mark on a treaty; two months later he led a small expedition to climb the still unscaled Mt. Victoria in the Cameroon mountains. Scarce with portrait and map. Penzer pp. 70-71.
