Barack Obama's fifth grade yearbook, "Na Opio O Punahou," signed by him with an inscription to a schoolmate

Honolulu, Hawaii

Yearbook for Punahou school, in Honolulu. Unpaginated. Extensively illustrated from photographs. 28x21.5 cm (11x8½"), color pictorial wrappers.

Rare yearbook inscribed and signed by Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States, as a young fifth grader at Punahou School, a college preparatory school in Honolulu, Hawaii. It is signed on the blank page at rear designated for autographs, the inscription reading "To the nicest guy I now [sic], Barry Obama." The recipient was Malcom Waugh, who is in a photograph with Obama and two other boys, holding up signs indicating they were "On Strike," perhaps an early incident of social activism by the one-time community organizer. We know of no earlier signatures of Barack Obama to appear on the market. The fifth grade was Obama's first year at Punahou School, and its influence on him was both profound and positive. At ceremonies for Teacher Appreciation Day on May 3, 2016, he made special reference to Ms. Mabel Hefty, his fifth grade teacher, and stated in a later email that she "reinforced that essential value of empathy that my mother and my grandparents had taught me. That is something that I carry with me every day as President. This is the simple and undeniable power of a good teacher..."

The printed covers are moderately foxed, lightly soiled, and shows some light wear near the corners; there are scattered spots of foxing near his inscription. Very good.
