The Way to the True Church

White, John

John Bill and William Barret

193mm x 149mm. pp [i-lix (intro, dedication, etc)], 1-456, [i-x (table)] 8°: a-d⁸ A-Z⁸ Aa-Ff⁸ Gg¹ Printed by Richard Field for John Bill and William Barret, 1616. Rebound by Colgate University into maroon boards, with gold stamping.

The "1" on the spine indicates volume 1 of a two part library bound set, the second being the "Defence [sic] of the Way to the True Church", no longer present. Research has led me to understand that this book is probably from the library of Samuel Mather (brother of Increase), and was willed to his nephew, Samuel. It is probable that it was also willed to Samuel from Richard (Increase's and Samuel's father). Samuel Mather was one of the more serious book collectors in the Colonial period.

Donated by Christopher Korczak, Easthampton, MA.

Lot Amendments

Binding is sound. There are some unobtrusive dampstains along the edges of the text block, especially at the second half. Two pencil marked passages found. Ex library copy with some of the usual markings (Colgate Divinity School). Scattered foxing.
