A pioneering British geologist, Catherine Alice Raisin (1855-1945) was the first woman admitted to the school of geology at the University College London, and only the second to receive a D.Sc. She conducted important research on petrology, especially serpentines, and collaborated with T.G. Bonney on highly regarded studies in South Devon and Salcombe. In 1898, she became the first woman to be appointed vice-principal of a college - at Bedford College, London, the institution where she spent her entire academic career. Much of her later years were dedicated to promoting female education and equality.
