Title:
The Tales of the Genii; or, the Delightful Lessons of Horam the Son of Asmar

Author:
Morell, Charles

Place:
London

Publisher:
James Wallis

Date:
1805

Description:

2 Volumes. 8vo. xliv, 368; 432 pp. Illustrated with two engraved frontispieces and twelve full page engraved plates. Contemporary full calf binding almost certainly by Edwards of Halilfax. Spines in 6 compartments with raised bands, the compartments intricately gilt, and with black leather lettering pieces, gilt. The boards stained, onlaid and tooled in panels with a central urn and with gilt and blind rolls on the borders; gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Later edition.

The plates were drawn by W. M. Craig and engraved by several hands. 'Translated from the Persian by Sir Charles Morell', though the tales, modeled on the 'Arabian Nights', were actually written by James Ridley under the pseudonym of Charles Morell. The evidence for this being an Edwards binding is that it has typical Edwards features; indeed, Maggs cat. 1075 and also NIxon's Oldaker Collection of British Bookbindings show calf bindings attributed to the Edwards bindery using tools apparently identical to those on this binding.
