Title:
A Dictionary of the English Language: In Which the Words are Deduced from their Originals, and Illustrated in their Different Significations by Examples from the Best Writers...the Sixth Edition
Author:
Johnson, Samuel
Place:
London
Publisher:
J.F. and C. Rivington, et al
Date:
1785
Description:

2 volumes. 551;545 leaves. Engraved frontispiece in Volume 1. (4to) 27.5x22 cm (11¾x8¾") period full calf, modern calf rebacking with red and black morocco labels. Sixth edition overall, second quarto edition.

The work was printed by several different printers, both as impressions for weekly publication and for publication in volumes. Johnson's Dictionary was viewed as the prominent dictionary of its time, and the foremost on the English language until the Oxford English Dictionary was published almost 200 years later. Unlike most modern dictionaries Johnson included humor and prejudice into many definitions: "Oats. n.s. [aten, Saxon.] A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people."
