With copper-engraved plates including portrait of John Ogilby; elaborate frontispiece with bust of Homer at center; portrait of Charles II; a statue of Homer holding a staff; & 49 plates illustrating scenes from the book. (folio) 42.5x27 cm. (16¾x10¾"), handsome early paneled calf, rebacked with spine strip laid down.

Very rare large and complete copy of Ogilby's first Homer translation, with strong and dark impressions of the plates. Engraved armorial bookplate.

Lot Amendments

Minor wear to binding; title-page remargined at gutter and lower edge, possibly supplied; two or three leaves with restoration to lower edge; occasional slight marginal dampstains, Mm4 with 4" tear into text, otherwise excellent, the contents crisp and clean and with full margins.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
