2 volumes (of 12, but complete in themselves). 122 plates with tissue guards, of which 39 are color-printed (14 chromolithograph landscape views by R. Swain Gifford and Fred S. Dellenbaugh) including frontispieces, numerous letterpress illustrations. 16 plates of birds, 2 of mammals, and 7 of flowers and 83 are photogravures, by Edward Curtis and others, as well as maps and numerous text illustrations. (8vo), original gilt decorated red cloth, top edges gilt. First UK Edition.

Financed and organized by Edward H. Harriman, the expedition in the summer of 1899 brought a party of 25 scientists and others to coastal Southeastern and Southern Alaska, the Aleutians, and the Bering Sea. The entire series contains a total of 56 papers by various authors, notable among them John Muir, John Burroughs, George Bird Grinnell (the authors of the first volume). Edward S. Curtis was one of the photographers in the group and the first 2 volumes contain numerous Curtis photogravures, as well as many by C. Hart Merriam and others. Volumes 1 and 2 include writings on History, Geography, Resources, Narratives, Glaciers, and Natives of Alaska.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
