Title:
A Voyage Round Great Britain, Undertaken in the Summer of the Year 1813, and Commencing From the Land's-End in Cornwall, by Richard Ayton, With a Series of Views Illustrative of the Character and Prominent Features of the Coast
Author:
Daniell, William & Richard Ayton
Place:
London
Publisher:
Longman, Hurst, et al.
Date:
1814
Description:

8 volumes. Various paginations. Uncolored aquatint dedication leaf in Volume 1, 308 hand-colored aquatint plates by and after William Daniell. Lacking the uncolored engraved view of Keamaes Head, Pembrokshire called for in Volume 2. (Folio) 36.5x25 cm (14¼x10¼") finely bound in full brown morocco by Riviere & Son, triple gilt-rule borders, spines gilt, raised bands, wide gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

A stunning collection of views, Prideaux says of the work "Such a succession of beautiful plates is scarcely to be found elsewhere and they are unsurpassed both in delicacy of drawing and tinting." Tooley calls the present work "the most important colour plate book on British topography." The voyage began from the Land's End and traveled the north coast of Cornwall, partly by land and partly by sea. Ayton accompanied the illustrator at his request to provide the descriptions to accompany the plates. Originally issued in parts and with an index chart was offered separately (not present here). A splendid copy of this exquisite presentation. Abbey Scenery 16; Prideaux p.326; Tooley 177.
