Description:

Two albums, with approx. 365 original gelatin silver photographs mounted on the leaves (207 in the 1st album, 158 in the 2nd), images approx. 6x8cm (2¼x3¼"). Albums are 18.5x28 cm (7½x10¾"), thin flexible morocco covers.

Marvelous photographic record of a tour of Asia, beginning in New England, then across the United States to San Francisco, where Philip Andrews embarks on the ship Korea, stopping briefly in Hawaii, then on to Yokohama, Tokyo, and other Japanese locales. After Japan, it's on to the crowded streets and rivers of China, and thence to India, with this latter country dominating the majority of the photographs. From India, it's back on shipboard, to the Pyramids of Egypt, where the albums end. The photographs are amateur and candid, the technique accomplished, but the developing and printing sometimes less so. The first 85 or so photographs are neatly captioned in ink, then unfortunately the captions end.  Still, a captivating look at look at Asia in the beginning of the 20th century.
