[4], 324 pp. With 14 wood-engraved plates including the frontispiece. Two folding maps laid in. (8vo) 18x13.5 cm (7x5¼"), original pictorial wrappers, with later plain wrappers affixed along spine; later chemise & slipcase. First Edition, second issue.
This is the second issue, with Lafcadio Hearn's name at foot of p.299, and with the illustration on front wrapper depicting a cathedral, not an alligator holding a sign in its mouth - the illustration on the cover is mounted, evidently canceling the alligator illustration of the first issue. There are two maps present, one which is apparently the one correct for the second issue, titled Topographical and Drainage Map of New Orleans - Staub at Goldthwaite's Book Store...", measuring approx. 55x55.5 cm, printed on cheap paper which is darkened and brittle, the map split into several pieces with some loss at folds. The other map, titled "Map of the City of New Orleans...", apparently from the first issue, is smaller (approx. 27.5x35 cm) and on better paper, but it two has splits at the folds with some minor loss.
