Thaddeus Hyatt (1816–1901) was an American abolitionist and inventor. In his opposition to slavery, Hyatt organized the efforts of abolitionists in Kansas to have the territory admitted to the Union as a free-state and campaigned for the federal government to aid Kansans afflicted by drought, the horrors of which are described in this pamphlet. Of the many copies located in OCLC only a single copy (Rutgers) matches the present with 70 numbered pages. All others note 68 numbered pages, some add 4 unnumbered supplementary pages. The author's name is in an early hand on the front wrapper but does not share much with two other examples located and may not be in the author's hand. Sabin 34114 (describing 68 page printing). No copies of any edition at auction since 1976.
