Author:

Dutch Flat, CA

Date:
July 24th, 1864
Description:

Autograph letter signed Jim, in ink, on both sides of a single sheet of lined paper. 24x19 cm (9½x7½").

Jim writes to his sister, filling her in on the rather dismal prospects of mining and other ventures ("we have had considerable trouble in business matters for the last two years"), and remarking on their disconnect from the war back east ("we hardly realize the amount of suffering caused by this war living so far from it"). However, Californians were not totally divorced from military matters, "Fourth of July our military Co. the Pacific Guard went on a visit to the City of Nevada by invitation guests of the Nevada Light Guards we left here on the second of July were gone four days we had a grand time. On our way we passed through two towns were received  by the citizens and military of each in great style the latter going with us. The Ladys of Nevada gave us a complimentary Ball on the night of the Fourth there were about one hundred and fifty Ladys in attendance... We have a beautiful uniform furnished by the state..." But, in the end, "I am more discontented the longer I am here it is as good a country as any to live in I suppose but if I don't make up my mind soon and settle down it will be too late as I shall in a few years be considered an old bachelor a great many of my acquaintances have gone home lately most of the have brought back partners..."
