Yearbook of first Playboy Jazz Festival, 1959

2 items:

The 1959 Play Jazz Festival Yearbook. Original pictorial wrappers, 66pp. Illustrated. Also:: 1960 Newport Jazz Festival Concert Tour. Original pictorial wrappers, 24 unnumbered pp. Illustrated

One year after the first Monterey Jazz Festival, the first Playboy Jazz Festival, founded by Hugh Hefner, was held at the Chicago Stadium. Among the stars, highlighted in the yearbook, were Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Earl Bostic, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Peterson, Sonny Rollins and Kai Winding. Curiously, the next Playboy Festival was not held until 1979 when the venue was moved to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
The 1960 booklet records a Concert Tour that followed the Sixth Newport Jazz Festival, starring the George Shearing Band, Thelonious Monk and his quartet and the Lennie Tristano Quintet.
