The Wonders of the Yosemite Valley, and of California

Kneeland, Samuel

Alexander Moore

[iii]-xii, 13-[98] pp. With 2 wood-engraved maps and 10 original photographic plates mounted on stiff paper by John P. Soule, with tissue guards, as issued. (Small 4to) 26.5x18 cm (10¼x6¾"), original green cloth ornately decorated in gilt and black, front cover decoratively lettered in gilt, rear cover stamped in blind, all edges gilt. Third Edition, revised.

Long regarded as one of the most attractive early books on Yosemite, this work contained in its second edition the first (albeit anonymous) appearance of any of John Muir's writings in a book. In this extended edition Kneeland quotes liberally and piratically from Muir's scientific reports but at least mentions his name. Since Soule never visited California, there has been speculation that the photographs were taken by John Houseworth or even by Eadweard Muybridge. Cowan (I), p. 131, (II), p. 333; Currey & Kruska 225; Farquhar 10c; Kimes 5-8; this edition not in BAL.

Lot Amendments

Spine ends frayed, light wear to cloth, early pencil gift inscription on front flyleaf; very good.
