Chez Antoine Dezallier

xxv, [2], 615 pp. (12mo) 17x10 cm (6¾x4"), contemporary calf, brown leather label, gilt decorations and lettering, marbled endpapers, all edges stained red. First Edition.

One of the earliest scholarly dictionaries of anonymous and pseudonymous literature, the authors of which are divided into three categories: pseudonymous writers, imposters and plagiarists. Included is an index of over 1700 pseudonyms.

Auteurs Deguisez was intended as a preliminary study, with a more extensive work to be published later, but Baillet’s project proved highly controversial and its continuation was discouraged. Baillet (1649-1706) was a monastic scholar and the librarian of M. de Lomoignon in Paris.
