The Ivory Gate

Collins, Mortimer

Hurst and Blackett

2 volumes. Half-titles present. (8vo), finely bound in later tan half calf and marbled boards, morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, marbled endpapers. First Edition.

An amusing novel, with a contemporary setting by the English poet and novelist, about the early career of Paul Veryan who had "four things to hinder him: his luck, his intellect, his temperament, and his temper." Veryan eventually becomes, for lack of any other occupation, a novelist. The Ivory Gate is probably a bit autobiographical, for Mortimer Collins struggled as a poet and wrote novels only as a last resort to support his family. Scarce.
