3 volumes. First Editions. Includes:

  • Lays and Ballads of English History, Etc. By S.M. vi, 184 pp. Frontispiece, pictorial title and one illustration. (12mo), contemporary green half calf and marbled paper boards, maroon morocco label, gilt rules and lettering. The frontispiece appears to be by John Tenniel. James Burns, [1856].
  • The Story of Queen Isabel and Other Verses. By M.S. vi, 111, [1] + 31, [1] ad pp. Two pages of publisher's advertisements preceding the title-page and 32-page publisher's catalogue at the end.(8vo), original blue blind-stamped cloth, spine with gilt lettering. Bell and Daldy, 1863.
  • Poems. viii, 313, [1] + 6 ad pp. (8vo), original blind- and gilt-decorated green cloth, gilt lettering. From the library of another poet, Canadian Kate Seymour Maclean (circa 1828-1914), with her signature, dated Ingersall, August 1874, on the half-title. Light wear to cloth; near fine. Strahan and Co., 1868.

Lays and Ballads is the author's first book. Queen Isabel with the decorative bookplate of scholar and journalist Percival F. Hinton. Menella Bute Smedley was a novelist and poet. A relative of Lewis Carroll, she wrote some minor novels and books of poems. Three scarce volumes.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
