Author:
Wyatt, M. Digby

Place:
London

Publisher:
Arundel Society

Date:
1856

Description:

[viii], 54 pp. Nine mounted albumen photographs. (4to) original leather-backed color-printed boards. First Edition.

First edition of the first book to include a photograph of a bookbinding. Three of the plates are photographs of bindings made of ivory, one in the BN, one in Milan Cathedral Library, and one in a private collection. The text also records the existence and location of several other ivory-carved book bindings. The plates show European pieces from the 6th to the 14th centuries with their locations, illustrated in a series of nicely reproduced albumen prints of varied size. The author notes that it took a long time to make the large number of photographic prints for the book. Gernsheim - Incunabula of British Photographic Literature, no. 51.
