Redrawn by Request: The Great Cartoons of J.R. Williams

Williams, J.R.

New York

Random House

Tall octavo. Original black buckram binding, with yellow lettering. First edition. Inscribed by Williams on the half-title.

A collection of nearly 250 of the best cartoons by J.R. Williams (1888-1957), whose classic depictions of laconic cowboy humor in the single panel comic "Out Our Way" ran daily in newspapers around the nation for more than 30 years. Following service with the U.S. Cavalry during World War I, Williams took a job at a crane manufacturing firm, where he started drawing cover designs for the company's catalog. "Out Our Way" appeared for the first time in 1922 and was eventually syndicated by the N.E.A. service to more than a thousand newspapers.

Donated by johnson rare books & archives, Covina, CA.

Lot Amendments

Mild coaster ring to the front panel of the dust jacket, with a bit of faint transfer to the front board. The dust jacket is moderately shelfworn, with some shallow chipping along the top edge, and a pair of lengthy tears to the rear panel that have been neatly mended on the verso with archival silk; otherwise very good.
