Letter from Monrovia, Liberia, describing his efforts in his missionary activities, and illness and other circumstances that are causing difficulties in their execution

Ellis, W.W.

Monrovia, Liberia

Oct. 12, 1847

Autograph letter signed by Ellis, to Rev. Walter Lowry in New York. 3 pages on 4-page stampless lettersheet, addressed on the 4th page. The pages are separated. 25x19.5 cm (9¾x7½").

A rather wordy letter, at times praising the Lord and his Prophet, and other times describing the illnesses that plague his wife, himself, and his two children, “we have altogether taken perhaps 4 of 5 dollars worth of medicines my wife has performed all the duties of the house while all the other immigrants had a servant to attend them during their six months acclimation (I did hire a woman 4 weeks at 50 cents per week)…”

After more about his living situation, he goes on to cast some aspersions on fellow missionaries, “Now sir I am by all my acquaintances in Alabama and Miss. known to be no slanderer neither directly nor indirectly but sirs you remember that you request me to inform you particularly on all subjects that concern the board and yourself. When we came to the Rev. ___ they informed me that they had not any pork, nor had they but very little of any thing else like provisions in the house, for a month previous, and the man in a dying state informed me shortly after that he had not tasted a bit of pork for six weeks… The man had not been out of his house for some considerable time and had not been at church for 3 months and even then he did not preach, for it was the general report that they had not enjoyed the means of grace in the sanctuary for 2 years!! But such was the effect of our arrival that he scrambled out of bed, went to church with the assistance of one under each arm only for fear that I might preach, and perhaps attract attention…”
