Fascinating record of a rail trip to California via the southern route to Los Angeles, visiting Pasadena, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, etc., then to Oakland via the inland route, with mention of the Tehachapi Loop. Once in the San Francisco Bay Area he took to his bike, traversing Berkeley, the Cliff House, Golden Gate Park, San Jose, etc. riding some 542 miles on the bicycle. Following a quick steamer trip to Rio Vista, he boarded the train for the return to Ohio, via Truckee and Salt Lake City. On his day in Golden Gate Park, "Getting some lunch we entered the Golden Gate Park going first to Children's Play Ground then meandering past Band Stand to the Conservatory then to Aviary then to Strawberry Hill..." While visiting Hayward, he does make comment on the morals of the Golden State in comparison to those of his native Tiffin, Ohio, "The one thing that is characteristic of this country is the desire and greed for money. People seem to worship gold. Impiety and irreligiousness seem to prevail very largely. While Hayward saloons do not seem to be so noisy in comparison to Tiffin saloons, yet they are a bad sign of the morality of the town." There are several pages detailing the expenses for the whole trip.
