Title:
Proposal for the building of the Frank Wiggins Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles

Author:

Place:
Los Angeles

Publisher:

Date:
1925

Description:

[20] leaves, consisting of photographs, printed & typed pages, facsimiles, etc. 28x22 cm (11x8½"), bound together with string through 3 punch-holes in top margins.

Proposal for the design, building, and staffing a world-class hospital in the rapidly growing city of Los Angeles, the growth the result to a large extent of the efforts of long-time L.A. booster and chamber of commerce member Frank Wiggins. The architects of the proposed building were to be Walker & Eisen.

The proposal includes a photograph of Wiggins on the front page, followed by a depiction of the proposed hospital, three printed pages outlining the need for the hospital, its features, and its directors and officers, then a typescript facsimile of the financing details and business structure, next reproductions of various newspaper articles attesting to the urgent need for the hospital, then a six-page list of doctors supporting the project, more financial figures, what amounts to a job application by a general contractor, etc. A fascinating document revealing details in the rapid growth of Los Angeles, and how things got done, or in this case, apparently, not got done - we can find no indication that the hospital was ever built. It seems health care has always been more complicated that it appears. No copies are listed in OCLC/WorldCat.
