Title:
Nepal Mandala: A Cultural Study of the Kathmandu Valley.
Author:
Slusser, Mary Shepherd.
Place:
Princeton
Publisher:
Princeton University Press
Date:
1982
Description:

2 volumes. Vol. I is text, Vol. II illustrated profusely from black and white photographs of Nepalese ruins and art, as well as maps. 11x8½"  half cloth & boards, gilt-lettered spines, jackets. First Edition.

According to Rachell Kellett, "this is a brilliantly conceived and fresh interpretation of the origins and evolution of the remarkable Nepalese civilisation that evolved in the Kathmandu valley. Dr. Slusser's meticulously researched work represents the first comprehensive interpretation of the cultural history of the Kathmandu Valley since Sylvain Lévi's seminal study almost a century ago."

According to Mandala Book Point, "Slusser… studied and photographed the sculptures and shrines, mapped the old cities and traced their long-fallen walls, attended festivals, and collected legends and folklore. Because of religious conservatism she could not excavate, but thanks to centuries of isolation that ended only in 1951, surface archaeology proved a very rewarding substitute. Equally rewarding were Nepali-language sources, impeccable studies heretofore neglected by Western scholars."
