Sui Sin Far [pseudonym of Edith Eaton]

1912
Description:

347 pages.  Illustrated with uncredited text decorations. (8vo) original printed red cloth, gilt, decorative endpapers and text pages. First Edition. With: Sui Sin Far, “Who’s Game?” pp. 573-579 in New England Magazine, February 1912, (complete issue)

The only book by the sister of Onoto Watanna, both mixed-race Chinese Americans who were literary pioneers. Partly a compilation of short stories that appeared earlier in periodical form, and partly a new composition, this is considered the first book-length fiction  - and the first Chinese children’s stories –by a Chinese American author. The separate 1912 story, which appeared four months before the book, was probably Eaton’s last original fictional periodical writing – and the only short story among her later work which did not have a Chinese theme.
