Description:

332 pages + 1 ad. Frontispiece portrait. (12mo), original red cloth, gilt titles in dust jacket. First Edition.

Ad is for a forthcoming Endow novel (“Love Is Love”) which was never published. Inscribed on frontispiece, “To Mary Sugiyama, with best wishes, Kay Karl Endow. Sacramento, November 2, 1935”.

Published seven years after his first book, a rarity of Asian-American literature as the first novel written by an American-born Japanese, the proceeds from this potboiler were supposed to finance a transpacific, Lindbergh-era, flight by Endow in the cause of Japanese-American friendship. The dust jacket describes the author’s preparations for the adventure as being “well under way”. It never took place, though the book supposedly sold more than 10,000 copies. Subsequently imprisoned for fraud, he was released in time for wartime internment in Colorado, and died in obscurity three years later.
