Two volumes. 457 pp. plus folding map, two folding plates, frontispiece, and errata; 436pp. plus folding plate and errata. (8vo) 20.5x129 cm (8x5") original paper covered boards. Reissue of first French edition.

A reissue of the first French edition of one of the classic accounts of southern natural history and exploration, with much material relating to the southern Indian tribes.  For the period, Bartram's work is unrivalled. "...Bartram wrote with all the enthusiasm and interest with which the fervent old Spanish friars and missionaries narrated the wonders of the new found world...he neglected nothing which would add to the common stock of human knowledge" - Field.  "Unequalled for the vivid picturesqueness of its descriptions of nature, scenery, and productions" - Sabin.  Sabin calls for four plates plus the frontispiece portrait.

Covers worn. Volume I: front cover nearly detached; first page of introduction detached. Volume II: text block detached from covers and spine with the exception of 2" of first page causing 2 inch closed tear through text and last few pages attached to rear cover.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
