“Ballad of Negro History”, first separate printing (after a first appearance in the Negro History Bulletin for February 1952) on lthe last page of “Suggestions  Original wrappers, 16pp.

Hughes’ lines mention, as historical icons, Crispus Attucks, Denmark Vesey, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, John Brown, Dunbar and Johnson, W.E.B.DuBois, Countee Cullen, Ralph Bunche and Josephine Baker.

Launched by Carter Goodwin, “Father of Black History”, in 1926, Negro History Week was the precursor to Black History Month, which began in 1970. The “Suggestions” pamphlet was first issued in the 1940s with only 14 pages, the Langston Hughes poem being added in this rare 1952 printing (which does not appear in WorldCat) The pamphlet was expanded to 32pp. in 1959.  In addition to the Hughes contribution, the pamphlet has poems by Paul Laurence Dunbar and James Weldon Johnson and the text of Johnson’s “Negro National Anthem”.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
