M.S. Garretson, secretary of the American Bison Society, is blunt in his criticism of the sheep farmer and the effects of his livestock on the range, which in his view was more properly exploited by cattle ranchers: "...it might be worth while to drag out a few facts in regard to the late Joseph, for public opinion, before some of his political friends, who owe their jobs to the wealth and influence of said Joseph and his satellites, erect a monument to his memory and neglect to put a tablet on one side having in relief a figure of a Basque sheepman killing antelope, bearing the title, 'We do as we please and defy the law," and another tablet on the other side representing several million acres of ruined country, with the caption, 'The Public Be Damned.' I believe the more publicity given to the lawlessness of these Basques, the sooner the public will wake up to the fact that they are a most undesirable lot of foreigners..."
