Record of Gold Coin Certificates

San Francisco

U.S. Mint, San Francisco

Unpaginated. Approx. 247 leaves with manuscript entries. (Folio) 39.5x26 cm (15½x10"), period three quarter leather and boards, gilt spine with raised bands.

A manuscript ledger of issued gold coin certificates from the San Francisco Mint, including names, dates, and totals of gold and silver coins. Most of the entries are from the years 1887-88, with later entries from 1923-24 present towards the rear. The San Francisco branch of the United States Mint was opened in 1854 to serve the gold mines of the California Gold Rush. It quickly outgrew its first building and moved into a new one in 1874. This building, the Old United States Mint, also known affectionately as The Granite Lady, is one of the few that survived the great quake and fire of 1906.

Lot Amendments

Fair amount of wear and soiling to binding, corners worn, spine strip detached but present; hinges reinforced with cloth tape, large areas of wormholing inner boards and leaves at front and rear with loss to text, becoming smaller in the middle of the volume; good.
