Two works bound together:

• Logarithmicall arithmetike. Or Tables of logarithms for absolute numbers from an unite to 100000, as also for sines, tangents and secants for every minute of a quadrant... [2], 54, [8], [2 blank] pp. Printer's device on title page. First edition in English. London: Printed by George Miller, 1631.
• Arithmetica Logarithmica, sive Logarithmorum chiliades centrum, pro numeris natuirali serie crescentibus ab unitate ad 100000, una cum Canone Triangulorum seu tabula artificicialium sinuum, tangentium & secantium...[6], 79, [1 blank], 764 pp. Title page printed in red and black, with old armorial bookplate on its verso. (Lacking errata leaf in the preliminaries). Editio secunda aucta per Adrianum Vlacq. Goudae: Excudebat Petrus Rammasenius, 1628.

First edition in English of Briggs' great work, the work from which modern logarithmic tables descend. Henry Briggs (1556-1630) has been called "the English Napier," but while influenced by Napier, his is a completely different system, the first published logarithmic tables based on the decimal system. The second work here bound (though chronologically the first), is considered the second edition of Briggs, but as the Encyclopedia Britannica notes, "Vlacq would have been quit entitled to have called his a new work... The results of Briggs' and Vlacq's work have not been superceded by any subsequent calculations..." Adrien Vlacque (1600-1667), a Dutch mathematician, greatly enlarged Briggs' tables, and this is regarded as a great improvement over Brigg's 1624 edition.
