Racism in slave-free Ohio - Letter

William F. Smith

Cincinnati, Ohio

May 4, 1848

Autograph letter Signed. 1pg.+ stampless address leaf. To George Wilson, Pickaway, Miami County, Ohio

“…If you cam down call at the Temperance House and they will tell you where to find us as we live close by,,old Dan Hopkins is dead, he died with the Small pox and left a Lazey Set of Nigroes…”

Slavery was illegal in Ohio, but racism, and racist stereotypes such as this, were commonplace before the Civil War.
