The 1870 issues discusses “freedmen” missions in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Texas; in 1876, there were articles on the “massacre” of Blacks in South Carolina, a Chinese community in San Leandro, California, the birth of the Hampton Institute in Virginia, a letter from a Chinese convert in Oakland, the Negro Jubilee Singers touring Europe, the “educatability of the Blacks” in Virginia, mob violence against the Chinese in San Francisco, and “training colored girls” at Fisk University in Tennessee.

After the Civil War, the emphasis of the American Missionary Association shifted from evangelizing abroad to the education and social welfare of freed African-American slaves, as well Chinese immigrants to California. Each of these issues includes a wealth of information on both efforts.
