Full text of provenance letter:
"The following anecdote pertains to this copy of Horseman, Pass By.
In 1961, shortly after Horseman was published, a man entered Larry McMurtry's bookshop (Booked Up) in Washington, D.C., with this copy and requested Larry to autograph it for him. Larry was surprised that anyone would want his signature and graciously signed this copy in his best penmanship. According to Larry, this is the first time he ever signed a copy of one of his books. Years later, Larry was able to purchase the copy and kept it in his private collection before he decided recently to consign it to the Three Dog Books firm in Archer City, Texas.
The interesting provenance of this copy of Larry McMurtry's first book was conveyed to me by Cody Ressell, a close friend of Larry's and owner of the Three Dog shop, when I telephoned him to order the copy for my friend Mike King, a prominent California attorney and collector of signed McMurtry first editions. The copy was listed, without comment about its source, in a five-page printout of McMurtry books for sale that Cody had provided to me.
The copy is waterstained which caused the dust-jacket to adhere to the covers and made some pages wavy. This careless and unfortunate defect, nevertheless, does not blemish its uniqueness.
Walter E. Smitth, October 19, 2002"
