Original painting from Rollercoaster

O'Malley, Kevin

c. 1995

Original acrylic with pen and ink on watercolor paper for a two-page spread in Kevin O'Malley's Rollercoaster. In mounted matte: 17x23", image: 11x17".

Signed by O'Malley at lower left of image. Depicts several elated children and one somewhat apprehensive adult aboard the rollercoaster. Included is an inscribed copy of the book with the artist's signature.

Kevin O'Malley recalls his inspiration for illustrating children's book from the picture book section of his elementary school library, where he has been detained at recess for talking. Disgusted with the cuteness of the selection, O'Malley eventually stumbled uponWhere the Wild Things Are, and found the type of art he felt he could relate to. Fortunately today, his own illustrated books fill the library shelves with colorful mixtures of humor and tradition in titles like Chanukah in Chelm, and the winsome Roller Coaster, both for which he received star reviews in the School Library Journal. Mr. O'Malley resides in Baltimore with his wife and children, where he says he keeps a studio in the attic, "which provides an inspirational view of the alley below."
