In 1963, the Peter Maurin Neighborhood House opened, offering daily activities and a co-op nursery to mainly African-American residents of West Oakland. Their community involvement preceded the Black Panthers, who took on a much more visual role in the neighborhood a couple years later. Recipes include fried buffalo fish, turtle stew, hog head cheese, smothered chicken wings, etc. Illustrations of neighborhood residents are wonderful.
