WARREN N. LANCASTER: Large Black Hard Rubber Self-Filler Fountain Pen, Gold-Filled Overlay, Rare

Warren N. Lancaster

United States

Large black hard rubber fountain pen, gold-filled filigree overlay. The Warren N. Lancaster imprint is partly visible through the filigree apertures. Self-filling mechanism, with bladder to be squeezed when the nib is submerged in ink. 145mm. No. 7 heart-vent nib, medium flex, engraved: "WARREN N. / LANCASTER / PEN Co. / SPRINGFIELD / MASS. / No. 7". Excellent condition, barrel and overlay both bright and lustrous, cartouche engraved with initials in the Edwardian manner.

A splendid, rare example of an early Lancaster overlay fountain pen. As Gary Lehrer noted in an old catalogue, "Warren Lancaster started in 1879, and many say his was the first successful fountain pen, a claim more commonly associated with L.E. Waterman. Interestingly, Lancaster blames the demise of his business on L.E., following Waterman’s contracting with the Day Rubber Co for all its production. Early on his biggest customers were J.P. Morgan Co. and the Federal Government".
