OMAS: Itala Chromograf Double-Nibbed Fountain Pen, Grey Striated Celluloid, Mint Condition

OMAS
Place:
Italy

Date:
c.1940
Description:

A rare and exceptional OMAS Itala Cromograf double-nibbed fountain pen, perhaps the rarest and most desirable vintage OMAS pen, presented here in perfect condition and fully operational. Grey striated celluloid barrel and cap, gold-filled band and clip, pump-filling system, cam-operated nib extending and retracting system, barrel imprinted "ITALA chromo-graf / BREVETTATA". Two fine 14K heart-vent gold nibs engraved "ITALA <585> chromo graf", both with medium flex, wonderfully responsive. 141mm. The pen has a very complex mechanism consisting of a gear and a series of springs. Pulling down the blind-cap first propels one nib; pulling it again retracts that nib and propels the other. There are two ink reservoirs: to fill the pen, first extend the blind-cap exposing two small fins. Slide one tab to the left and press the blind cap to operate the button-fill mechanism. When finished filling the first ink chamber, slide the fin back in place and repeat with the other fin to fill the second chamber. Excellent condition; the pen appears to be new-old-stock and has no flaws or blemishes whatsoever.

"Itala Cromograf" was trademarked in 1936 by Girodi & Campanelli and registered in France in 1938. The patent was granted in 1939. In 1941 Omas registered a company called "Societa Anonima Vendita Penna Bicolor Itala Cromograph" in Geneva, which translates to: "Sale of two-tone Itala Cromograph Incorporated Company." While "Omas" does not appear on the pen itself, it’s known that Omas registered this new company for the sale and/or distribution of the Itala Cromograph they were then producing.
