456 pp. 6 steel-engraved portrait plates; 5 duotone woodcut plates; map, folding facsimile. (12mo) 185 x 125 mm. Three-quarter tan morocco with linen-covered boards, lettered in gilt on spine with blindstamped ornaments, raised bands. First Edition with original gilt-lettered cloth bound-in at rear.

The facsimile of the Declaration of rights is present, which is often not the case. "Colton, the first alcalde of Monterey under American control, wrote a diary largely devoted to interesting details of incidents connected with the author's administration of justice..."- Zamorano. The single-page map is "Valley of the Sacramento and San Joaquin. J.W. Orr. NY." Cowan p.137; Graff 839; Howes C625; Kurutz 151a; Wheat Gold Region p.74, map 148; Zamorano Eighty 20 (all for first 1850 edition). Laid in is a bookplate from Christopher Magee Steel.

Lot Amendments

A few minor scuffs to cover; hinges starting, mild toning to margins, stubtear to facsimile with a few creases; about near fine.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
