An instant classic and one of the most important illustrated books of its time, it was issued in a binding which did not hold up well, and fine copies in the original binding are quite rare. According to BAL, the first edition was "published October 23, 1883, in an edition of 3000 copies, of which 510 were sent in sheets to...London." BAL 16378.
