The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown, in Nottinghamshire

Pyle, Howard

New York

Charles Scribner's Sons

296 pp. Frontispiece, plates and other illustrations by Pyle. Title page printed in black and red. (4to), re-backed with original brown embossed leather, original spine strip laid down, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gray-brown coated endpapers, all edges stained orange. First Edition.

An instant classic and one of the most important illustrated books of its time, it was issued in a binding which did not hold up well, and fine copies in the original binding are quite rare. According to BAL, the first edition was "published October 23, 1883, in an edition of 3000 copies, of which 510 were sent in sheets to...London." BAL 16378.

Lot Amendments

Areas of rubbing to leather, spine strip starting to peel a bit at edge; repaired closed tear to front free endpaper, early gift inscription, light toning to page margins; very good.
